The challenge

A new pump station on a 300 km crude oil pipeline had to restart at full flow after any stop, in 50 °C summer heat and fine sand, five hours’ drive from the nearest town.

The operator wanted one supplier for motors, drives and the drive house, and as little electrical work on site as possible.

What we did

  1. Drive train design

Three 2.5 MW 3.3 kV Ex db flameproof motors, sized for full-flow restarts and load sharing between pumps.

  2. Drive house

Medium voltage drives, transformers and controls in one 18-metre steel building, cooled for 50 °C.

  3. System test

Full-power test of all three drive trains in Jebel Ali, witnessed by the operator’s engineers.

  4. Site and support

Commissioned in five days by our Muscat team, who now hold critical spares on site.

The drive house arrived tested, wired and ready to plug in. We were pumping crude nine days ahead of plan.
