Inside Field One

Eleven parts. No glue.

Scroll to take it apart. Everything is screwed together so it can be serviced for decades.

Take it apart

  1. Swappable battery Behind a door, not a sealed bay.
  2. Serviceable lens Three element groups, each one replaceable.
  3. Built to be opened Standard screws throughout.

What each part does

The parts that decide how your photos look, and why we chose them.

  • A woman reading by a café window in soft light

    Sensor

    A 24 MP full-frame sensor

A back-illuminated 36 × 24 mm sensor with no low-pass filter. Clean files to ISO 6400, usable at 25,600, and 14 stops of dynamic range at base ISO. We chose 24 MP over more because the files stay small, the lens out-resolves it, and the pixels gather more light.

  • The Hatta dam lake between bare mountains at dusk

    Lens

A 35 mm f/2 lens, designed for this sensor

Seven elements in five groups, two of them aspherical. Sharp across the frame wide open, with nine rounded aperture blades and a close focus of 70 cm. A proper hard stop at infinity, so you can find it by feel in the dark.

  • Children jumping off a stone pier into the sea

    Shutter

A leaf shutter you can barely hear

The shutter sits inside the lens, so there’s no curtain slapping across the sensor. Speeds from 30 seconds to 1/4000, flash sync at every speed up to 1/2000, and no rolling-shutter wobble on fast subjects.

  • Photographer raising the camera to their eye in an old lane with a wind tower behind

    Viewfinder

    A coupled optical rangefinder

A 0.72× bright-line finder with a 41 mm effective base length. Line up the double image and you’re in focus, accurate to f/2 at 70 cm. Framelines shift for parallax as you focus.

  • Camera on a café table next to a phone and a coffee

    Power

A battery that lasts a weekend

A 1,500 mAh removable battery behind its own door, good for about 600 shots. Charges in the camera over USB-C in two hours, or in the optional dual charger.

The leaf shutter is so quiet that people on the metro didn’t notice me at all. That changes how you photograph.
