Kiln & Co

One day in a pottery studio in Al Quoz, for a website, packaging and a year of social posts.

The commission

The story

Sara Lindqvist moved to Dubai from Stockholm twelve years ago and makes tableware in a warehouse unit in Al Quoz, selling it online and to a handful of the city’s cafés and restaurants. Her old photos were product shots on a white sweep, and they made her work look like everybody else’s.

We planned the day around a firing, so there would be wet clay, a full kiln and finished pieces all in one place. In the morning I photographed Sara throwing and trimming; after lunch we opened the kiln; at the end of the day we shot the new glazes on her own shelves, in the window light she works in every day.

She now has one set of pictures that does everything: the website, the packaging insert, stockist pitches and about eighteen months of Instagram.

One day of shooting gave us a year of website, packaging and Instagram photos. Eighteen months on we’re still using them.
