About
Eleven years of photographing people at work, from Dubai to Liwa and back again.
My story
Hello, I’m Juno
Portrait and documentary photographer, Dubai
I’ve always liked watching people do the thing they’re good at.
I grew up in Busan, the daughter of a nurse and a marine engineer, and spent a lot of my childhood in other people’s workplaces: hospital corridors, ships’ engine rooms, my grandmother’s corner shop by the fish market.
After studying photography in Seoul, I moved to Dubai in 2012 and spent three years assisting a staff photographer on one of the city’s daily newspapers, carrying bags and learning how to get a portrait in four minutes on a doorstep. I went freelance in 2015 and have worked from a small studio in Dubai Design District since 2019.
Today I split my time between editorial commissions, documentary projects for charities and co-operatives, and brand photography for makers and small companies. I still take on a handful of private portrait sessions each month, because they keep me honest.

How I work
Most shoots follow the same shape, whether it’s a magazine story or a portrait in your kitchen.
-
Ask
A call before anything is booked: who you are, what the pictures are for, and what you’d hate them to look like.
-
Wait
Time on location before the camera comes out. Sometimes ten minutes, sometimes two nights.
-
Make
Available light wherever it works, small quiet cameras, and no big crew.
-
Edit
A first edit within five working days, then final files once you’ve chosen.
Kit
Small and quiet, so the room stays as it is.
-
Cameras
Two Fujifilm GFX 100S bodies for commissions; a Mamiya 7 with Portra 400 for personal work.
-
Lenses
Fixed 35mm and 63mm equivalents for almost everything, a 110mm for tight portraits.
-
Light
Two battery flash heads and a large soft box, used only when the room has nothing to give.
-
Editing
Calibrated screens, colour checked against test prints from a giclée lab in Al Quoz.
-
Insurance
Public liability to AED 5 million and professional indemnity to AED 2 million, certificates on request.
