Nervous patients

Nervous about the dentist? What actually helps

Small changes that make a big difference, from longer appointments to a stop signal you control.

Relaxed patient wearing headphones in a dental chair

About one in three adults feels anxious about the dentist, and around one in ten avoids going altogether. If that’s you, you’re in good company, and you won’t be judged here for how long it’s been.

Tell us when you book

The most useful thing you can do is let us know. We’ll book you a longer first appointment so nothing is rushed, and we’ll do nothing but talk unless you want to.

Things that help

  • A stop signal you control. Raise your hand and we stop, every time.
  • Knowing what’s next. We explain each step before we do it.
  • Headphones and your own music or a podcast.
  • Numbing gel before any injection, and a slow, careful technique.
  • Short appointments, so you can build up gradually.
Most people tell us the worry beforehand was worse than the visit itself.

When more support is needed

For some people, sedation makes treatment possible. We can refer you to a local sedation service and continue your routine care with us afterwards.

If you’ve been putting off a visit, call and talk to Layla on reception. She can answer questions and book you in at a quiet time.
